Tips For Long Term Storage of Furniture and Appliances

Long Term Storage Sydney Tips

Moving into a smaller home can be extremely challenging, especially if you can’t fit everything comfortably the way you want. And out of everything you own, your appliances and furniture take up the most space. You have several options to reduce these items in your home: donating, selling, or placing them in storage units. In this post, we share long term storage Sydney tips to preserve the condition of your furniture and appliances while they’re in self-storage units.

Storing Furniture

Couches, tables, and other furniture items can be challenging to pack up and store, especially if you plan on leaving them in the storage unit for a long time. Luckily, there are a few simple guidelines you can follow to preserve their beauty and functionality.

1. Disassemble what you can.

If you assembled your own furniture, you won’t likely have problems disassembling them before storage. On the other hand, if you’re having trouble breaking down your pool table, IKEA drawers, and larger items, you may want to hire a professional mover or assembler since they’re likely to have the necessary tools.

2. Clean items prior to storage.

Even with regular use, furniture items tend to gather dirt or dust. Cleaning and disinfecting prior to storage helps prevent the deterioration of your favourite couch, coffee table, or chair. The last thing you want is to attract pests to your belongings because you failed to get rid of a few cookie crumbs.

3. Keep everything covered and together.

After disassembling your furniture, keep the pieces that go together in one bag and label them. Since you’re leaving them for a prolonged period, you might forget what goes where so label the pieces too.

For items that you can’t disassemble, you’ll need to cover them with breathable material to prevent mould or mildew.

Storing Appliances

Appliances such as microwaves, refrigerators, and ovens can be time-consuming to prepare for secure self storage. To protect them from dents and scratches, follow the tips below.

1. Clean all filters, grids, and tubes.

Failing to get rid of accumulated dust and grime will shorten the lifespan of your appliances. Additionally, drain the holding tanks and hoses of water to prevent mould from forming. You’ll also want to get rid of any food particles to prevent pests.

2. Stack properly.

Always keep the larger and more durable items at the bottom and the lightest ones on the top. It’s also a good idea to keep all appliances upright, paying attention to how the weight is distributed throughout the storage unit.

3. Protect the appliances.

Even if you’re leaving the contents of your storage units for an extended period, protect them with bubble wrap to prevent damage during transport. Moving blankets are also a good idea instead of plastic wraps since they allow for better air circulation.
