How to Organise Your Mini Self Storage Unit?

Mini Self Storage

If you’re planning on renting a mini self storage unit and have a lot of items to store, you may be wondering how you can make use of the space effectively.

The truth is that while there are challenges to self storage, it isn’t necessarily difficult to do either. To help you organise your storage unit in the best way possible, we share points below that are worth remembering for the next time you rent a mini self storage unit.

1. Plan ahead

If you want to make use of your secure mini storage unit as effectively as possible, it’s important to plan ahead. Having a proper plan lets you consider the type of items you’ll be storing, as well as their sizes and weight.

This also helps you determine if you’ll need more than one storage unit and how you can arrange the items well.

2. Make an inventory

Have a clear picture of all the items you need to store by making a list.

It’s better to organise the items according to type. Books and documents, for example, can go in the same box. Fragile items, on the other hand, should be packed carefully and even have bubble wrap and tape padding to prevent damage.

3. Consider mildew

Storing items in plastic bags may seem like a great way to organise items, but this can encourage mildew, which can lead to damages.

Instead of using plastic bags, cover your things with cloth or old sheets so air can circulate properly and prevent condensation.

4. Distribute the weight properly

When using bigger boxes, place the heavier materials at the very bottom and lighter items on top. For books, it’s good to use smaller boxes since they’re easier to move around once they get filled.

5. Dismantle furniture

Taking apart larger furniture can create plenty of additional room, especially since you reduce hollow or empty areas. This helps you to maximise space and fit in more storage boxes.

6. Prevent infestations

The more security measures you take to protect your items from infestation, the fewer problems you’ll have. Use mothballs, moisture absorbers, and even rodent bait to manage potential pests.

Avoid storing food in mobile self storage boxes at all costs. Not only does this also encourage pests, but may also void the contract you have with the storage company.

7. Use same-sized boxes

While it’s perfectly acceptable to use any available boxes you have on hand, using boxes of the same size makes it easier for you to plan and stack your storage.

Make sure to place smaller boxes on top of the bigger ones and that the bottom boxes are sturdy enough to hold the entire load.

Know the do’s and don’ts of organising your items in mini self storage units

While the tips we’ve shared in this post are not meant to be an exhaustive list of suggestions to help you properly organise your items, they will prove useful if you’re planning on renting smaller self storage containers.

Mini self storage units don’t offer the same space that regular storage containers do. They are, however, incredibly mobile and flexible enough for most people’s storage needs, so proper organisation is key.
